English language learners need more than the Science of Reading, they need to benefit from the Science of Speaking! Let’s explore…

Learning your first language was easy, wasn’t it? There were no formal lessons, rules of grammar, vocabulary lists, or stress, of any kind, involved. Most children learn their first language before they arrive in kindergarten and long before they learn to read and write. However, the effectiveness of learning a second language is much lower than that of our first. In fact, the rate of success of second language learning is only a fraction of that of first language learning. So why is learning a second language so much more challenging?

At LanguaMetrics, we know that there are two fundamental reasons why the way you learned your first language is so successful.

At LanguaMetrics, we know that there are two fundamental reasons why the way you learned your first language is so successful.

The Role of Listening

Listening is the first and most important technique for efficiently learning a language. When we learn our first language, listening begins in the womb. We accomplish months of listening in the womb, during which time the rhythm and percussion of the language is imprinted upon our brain. This listening mechanism continues throughout our first year to 18 months of life. We observe the world around us as an infant and are bombarded with the sights and sounds of our language. This is over a year of listening before speaking even begins. Traditional classroom instruction does not prioritize listening this way.

Instant Feedback

The second critical factor for the success of how we learn our first language is instant feedback on our speech. When babies say their first words this is a celebrated event. Mom and dad or caregivers praise and provide instant feedback on the baby’s speech. This process continues as baby talk morphs into language.

The key point is that we receive feedback and correction on our pronunciation from the very beginning of our language-learning journey.

EnglishRev™’s methodology is designed to leverage the Rev Learning Suite™ technology, combined with our unique content libraries, to make learning English as your second language more like the way you learned your first language. This technique increases students’ learning efficiency and accelerates their ability to both speak and understand their new language (Romberg & Safran, 2010).

Learning a second language is a social and emotional experience

Learning a second language is a social and emotional experience

Adults have a great deal of difficulty learning a foreign language, even when they are enrolled in formal courses for many years. Imagine what it is like for a young child to find themselves floating in a sea of unknown words and phrases without enough support. It is not uncommon for English language learners to fear speaking to others in English. It can create serious social and emotional anxiety and stress.

EnglishRev™ creates a place where students can develop their English speaking and listening skills without the fear and anxiety that can occur in real-life situations. Our virtual immersive environment gives students a safe space to practice their speaking and listening before they use these skills in the real world. Imagine, it’s like having a personal language coach to help you just before going out to the big game. Or in this case, practicing how to ask for a sandwich before heading to the cafeteria!

Practice for the Real World with the Fun of Comics

Practice for the Real World with the Fun of Comics

Meet Linda, a newly immigrated student to the United States who meets friends who help her navigate many types of daily scenarios at school and in everyday life! Linda speaks English with an accent and experiences many of the emotions and insecurities of a young student assimilating to a new language and new environment. Students are first presented with situational experiences in our “Comics”. Students are able to practice the virtuous cycle of learning, in a safe space, by listening to the model, recording themselves, seeing their scoring, listening to themselves speak, and rerecording, as needed until they are comfortable.

Each comic book has a set of comprehension questions to assess the student’s comprehension of the story.

Research shows that English learners benefit from opportunities to actively listen and actively speak. When students practice listening and speaking within EnglishRev™ using The Virtuous Cycle of Learning they are able to listen and speak as many times as they want without feeling pressured or intimidated to speak as they may sometimes experience in the real world.
